Our Origins

Jesselton (now Kota Kinabalu) is a name that holds great historical value for being a new township founded by the North Borneo Chartered Company in 1899. The British North Borneo (now Sabah) was a British protectorate under the sovereign of the North Borneo Chartered Company from 1882 to 1941.

Named after Sir Charles Jessel, the vice-chairman of the Chartered Company Jesselton became the Company’s administrative centre from 1900 to 1941, before the Japanese occupation took place between 1942 and 1945.

The origins of Jesselton College dated back to 1988 where it was then known as the Sabah Institute of Management (SIM). The SIM was later renamed in 1999 as Institut Prima Bestari (IPB). After its relocation to Kota Kinabalu in 2008, IPB then signed an MOU with Bond Australia for credit transfer for degree programmes. As part of the initiatives to commemorate and embrace an identity closer to home to the Sabahans, the name of Jesselton College was later carefully chosen to replace IPB.
